Bobbie Ernestine Simon, 89

Bobbie Ernestine Simon, a beautiful soul who graced this world for 89 years, entered heaven on the wings of angels on June 14, 2016. Born in Portsmouth, Ohio, she served as a school teacher and administrator for 35 years, mentoring work-study students and organizing some of the first special education classes in Ohio. She founded one of Ohio’s first summer camps for physically and mentally handicapped youth and was a noted advocate for the disabled. A role model to many, her dedication to molding young people into responsible, self-fulfilled adults was her legacy through her work with Girl Scouts, students and varied civic and church activities. Upon retiring from teaching, she moved to Miami to live with her daughter and was an active member of Kendall United Methodist Church, where she took part in the choir, United Methodist Women and diverse mission projects, always ready to share a smile and kind words with others.

Bobbie was a world traveler, having visited 80 countries on five continents. She made friends wherever she went and loved to tell stories about her travels and life experiences. Christian faith was her guiding principle. She made a positive impact through love, service and good will to all. Preceded in death by her husband, Robert, she is survived by four children, Denis (Denise) Simon (John, Luke, Mark, Mathew, Mary); Deborah (Richard) Spitzfaden (Renee, David, Diane); Madelyn (Jose) Lozano (Marisa, Michelle); and Joseph (Maureen) Simon; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Gifts in memory may be made to Epworth Village, Inc. (www.epworthvillagefl.org), in support of its mission to the elderly, and to Nauvoo United Methodist Church in West Portsmouth, Ohio, her beloved home.
