Donald Edward Covert, 86

Donald Edward Covert, 86, was received into the arms of Jesus at Pristine Senior Living Center of Portsmouth on Tuesday, September 27, 2016.  He was born September 22, 1930 to Dewey and Theodoshia Covert.  After his father’s passing, Don was raised by his step-father, Willy Skaggs, whom he loved.

Don was employed by the NW and NS Railway for 37 years as a Brakeman/Conductor both in the rail yards and on the road.  He also managed several Standard Oil stations around Portsmouth and served as a Special Deputy under Russell Burns and John Knauff.

A 32 degree Mason from Nauvoo Lodge #769 he was also a member of the Clown and Hillbilly units of El Hasa Shrine in Ashland KY, the York Rite and Scottish Rite.

Most importantly, after his 1985 baptism, Don was very active in the Lord’s service at the Dry Run Church of Christ.  He served over the years in many capacities but as a child of the Great Depression, his passion was children in need and making sure no child went hungry.

Don was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Darlene Fife Covert, one daughter Pamela Sue Covert of West Portsmouth, two brothers William Covert of Wheelersburg and Jack Covert of Portsmouth, and twin infant sisters Alice and Annie Covert.

Don is survived by his wife, Pamela Sue Ledingham Covert, whom he married in 1984, one daughter, Judy Lynn Wise (Mike Coldiron) of West Portsmouth, two grandchildren, Jessica Darlene Hicks and Dustin Edward Wise, both of West Portsmouth, six great-grandchildren, Ethan Wise, Emmerie Wise, Gavin Wise, Kayden Crisp, Devin Hicks, and Abigail Wise all of West Portsmouth, a brother Ronnie Covert of Lucasville, one special niece, Lori Sue (Brad) Gosnell of Dublin Ohio whom he helped raise, and a special cousin, Betty Scaggs of Portsmouth.  He also leaves many other nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews whom he loved.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Friday, September 30, 2016 at the Dry Run Church of Christ in West Portsmouth across from Doctor Singleton Park with Minister Mark Seevers officiating, and interment in Scioto Burial Park.  Friends may call at the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth from 6 to 8 PM on Thursday and one hour before the service on Friday. A Masonic service will be held at 8:00 PM on Thursday by Nauvoo Masonic Lodge #769.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Pristine Senior Care Center at 8th and Chillicothe Streets for their genuine concern and unwavering patience and kindness shown to Don and all their residents.  Heartfelt gratitude also goes to SOMC Hospice for their loving care and kindness.

If you would like to make any donations, you may do so in Don’s name to the Dry Run Church of Christ’s Children’s Program c/o Alex Coakley and SOMC Hospice.

Condolences may be sent to www.rogerwdavisfuneralhome.com.
