Sarah Frances Major, 87

Sarah Frances Click Major was born on March 2, 1929 and died on September 30, 2016. She is survived by her husband of 69 years Charles Major and her four children and their families: Linda (Larry) Woods of St. Joseph, Michigan and their children Rachel and Adam; Patricia (Tom) Anglin of Savannah, Georgia and their son Charles; Richard (Karen Brewster) Major of Johnson City, Tennessee and their children Will and Shannon; and John (Debra Schultz) Major of Brooklyn, New York, and his children Chelsea, Dylan, and Rosalind. She is also survived by her sisters Mary Jennings and Connie Lowder and her five great-grandchildren: Trevor, Nick, Ryan, Luke and Kyle, children of Rachel and Marty Walsh of Toledo, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents Lillie and Harrison Click, two sisters and five brothers.

Frances Click came to Portsmouth at the age of 15, working at the Greyhound Bus Station and Selby’s Shoes. At the age of 18, she married Charles Major on September 15, 1947. They recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. A devoted employee, among her jobs, she worked for Good Shepherd Manor, Blackburn's, and Kroger's. She was a member of Dry Run Church Of Christ since March 1959. Always a giving person and caring community member, her long record of service is outstanding. She volunteered regularly at Dry Run Church of Christ, Vacation Bible School, Scioto Memorial Hospital, West Portsmouth Little League, the Cub Scouts, and the Portsmouth West Band Boosters. She was an election worker for 50 years and involved in the PTA for 32 years. She was in Portsmouth's first training class for hospice volunteers. Together, Frances and Charles particularly enjoyed serving as ushers at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts.

She loved being with her family In Ohio and Kentucky and her extended family of church friends. Among her interests were cooking, gardening, volunteering, and travel.

A very compassionate person with a tremendous work ethic, she faced challenges in her life with great fortitude and courage. Keeper of her family's history, she was an excellent storyteller, and left many wonderful memories for her family to pass on.

In honor of Frances and in lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Shannon Major Special Needs Trust, c/o Hopwood Memorial Christian Church, P.O. Box 149, Milligan College, Tennessee 37682.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Monday October 3, 2016 at Dry Run Church of Christ in West Portsmouth with Mark Seevers officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Portsmouth. Friends may call at the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth on Sunday from 5 to 7:00 PM and at the church on Monday starting at 10:00am.
