Diana Lee (Copas) Maple

January 8, 1960 – April 1, 2026

Diana Lee (Copas) Maple, 66, of West Portsmouth, Ohio, passed away on April 1, 2026, at SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth, Ohio. Diana was born on January 8, 1960, in Ulm, Germany, to Virgil and Laura (Stephens) Copas. She graduated from Northwest High School in 1978 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Education from Ohio University in 1982 — the beginning of a lifetime devoted to teaching and service.

Diana began her teaching career in Otway and spent 30 years in the Northwest Local School. District before retiring in 2013. Her dedication to students extended far beyond the classroom. Over the years she served as a cheerleading advisor, After School Mall/Education Station leader, member of the Athletic Boosters, Little League volunteer, tutor, and a member of the Redbird Community Connection. She also worked at the former Teachers Apple in Portsmouth and Chillicothe, and served as a gate leader at the Scioto County Fair.

Retirement did not slow her down. Diana continued as a substitute teacher in Northwest Local School District before joining Scioto County Aspire in 2021, where she served as an Adult Diploma instructor at STAR Community Justice Center — teaching adults pursuing their diplomas until July 2023. Her commitment to education spanned every stage of life, from the youngest students to adults seeking a second chance.

A model of selflessness, Diana was a dedicated teacher, a steadfast friend, and a loving mother. Above all else, she adored her children and grandchildren, and there was nothing in this world she would not do for them. She gave freely of her time, her talents, and her heart — and those who knew her are better for it.

Diana was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Lee Maple, her parents, Virgil and Laura Copas, her sister-in-law Debbie Newman, and her brother-in-law David Maple.

She is survived by her sons, Christopher Maple and Jacob (Karla Batista) Maple; her daughter, Laura (Ryan) Holbrook; and five grandchildren, Dante and Rhea Maple, Elijah and Owen Holbrook, and Zayden Maple Batista. She is also survived by her sister, Lisa Howard; her brother, Matthew Copas; sisters-in-law Lisa Copas, Shelly (Tom) Temple, Karen (David) Smith, Julie (Chuck) Cooper, and Mary Maple; brother-in-law Danny (Loreen) Maple; Hollie Crabtree, who remained a cherished part of the family; along with many nieces, nephews, and dear friends, including her cherished friend and fellow teacher, Doris Chamberlin.

Per Diana's wishes, no funeral services will be held. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In her memory, a scholarship will be established to support students who plan to pursue a degree in education at Ohio University Southern — a fitting tribute to a woman who gave so much to the next generation. Donation information will be announced soon.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth. Condolences may be sent to www.rogerwdavisfuneralhome.com.
