Obituary

Ellen J. Underwood, 79

Ellen J. Underwood, 79, of West Portsmouth, died Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at Southern Ohio Medical Center. She was born June 30, 1947, in Portsmouth, to the late John Paul and Juanita Mae (Artis) Smith. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Mark Allen Smith and William Smith.

Ellen retired from Anheuser-Busch, where she worked as a brewer. She enjoyed the simple things in life, whether it was sitting on her porch, spending time with her beloved pets, or taking trips with her friends. Above all, Ellen treasured the time she spent with her family and those she loved.

She is survived by a son, Shawn (Gianina) Underwood; two daughters, Regina Lea (Larry) Martin and Tonya Underwood; seven grandchildren, Trish (Jeremy) Richardson, Wendy (Matt) Grosshans, Aaron (Brandy) Martin, Alexandria (Ron) Stevens, Natalie Underwood, Shyenne Underwood, and Brianna Underwood; seven great-grandchildren, Aiden Grosshans, Cameron Jones, Raelynn Strickland, Lennox Stevens, Maddox Stevens, Atticus Stevens, and Elliot Yates; a sister, Anita June Chancy; and three nieces, Christine Chancey, Trina (Mark) Bender, and Wendy (Chuck) Kitchen.

Graveside services will be held at 12 noon Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Rushtown Cemetery in McDermott. Family and friends may gather at the cemetery beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth. Condolences may be sent to www.rogerwdavisfuneralhome.com.
