Gretchen Marie"Granny" Hopkins, 88 of Stout, Marie went on to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 17, 2010 from her home. She was born in Tulga, Kentucky, on August 7, 1921 and resided in Stout, Ohio.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents Ora (Denver) Justice and James (Rebecca) Vest; three grandsons Larry and Garry Askew, and Gary Crabtree; three brothers, Denver Justice, Jr., George Justice and Jimmy Justice; three sisters, Hazel Skidmore, Deanna Phipps and Helen Ruth Vest. She was also preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, Estel Hopkins whom she married on May 21, 1938 in Greenup, Ky. and had 63 wonderful years with. Estel Passed away on August 2, 2001.
Marie became a Christian at the age of fifteen, and rededicated her life to Christ in September of 1957.She took great joy in being a pastor's wife as Estel began as Pastor of Pond Run Baptist Church in 1962, and continued for nearly forty years. She remained faithful serving as a member of Pond Run Baptist Church and enjoyed visiting the many churches in her area. Marie attended Wheelersburg High. She was employed at Schaffer's Grocery in Portsmouth and later retired from West Side Foodland on August 1, 1984. Known by the members of her community as 'Granny', Marie was a loving mother and grandmother to her children and a role mode to all who knew her. Granny would always extend an invitation to come and visit her at church. She had the gift of giving and unselfishly laid her life down for her friends. She loved to feed the hungry and would often visit those at the hospital. She had a gentle, loving, caring personality, and a special gift for leading others to the Lord.
Marie is survived by one son, Jerry (Karol) Hopkins of Goshen, Ohio; two daughters, Jane (George) Howard of Stout, and Phyllis Askew of Portsmouth; and one special niece who lived with her, Anna Irene 'Sissy' Hopkins and a son-in-law and caregiver John Askew, one brother, Harold 'Lee' (Patty) Justice and five sisters, Ida Lewis, Mary Lybrook, Bonnie (Glen) McNamer, JoAnn Roberts and Alice (Ray) Kimbler, Her grandchildren include two grandsons and eight granddaughters: Larry (Tina) Tyree, Shawn Tyree, Kim (Jeff) Schmidt, Kelly (Terry) Stacy, Cindy (Ty) Crabtree, Christine (Lee) Scott, Gerri (John Lilly) Fisher, Sherri Tyree Crabtree, Stacy (Justin) Dayton and Jennifer (Tim) Parson. Additionally, Granny has 24 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren and a multitude of special friends and members of her Christian family.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Friday July 23, 2010 at Pond Run Baptist Church with Pastor Jim McCullough officiating and interment in McKendree Cemetery.
Please join the family at the Roger W. Davis funeral home in West Portsmouth in celebration of Marie's life on Wednesday from 5 to 8:00 pm and on Thursday from noon to 8:00pm and one hour prior to the funeral on Friday at the church.
