Harley Frederick "Fred" Shupert, Jr., 75 of West Portsmouth died Monday December 8, 2014 at SOMC Hospice. He was born December 23, 1938 in Yellowbud, Ohio to the late Harley F. and Lula Faye Black Shupert Sr. Fred was a United States Navy Veteran. He worked at Kroger's and Schaffer's Grocery for many years. On February 26, 1969 Fred and his wife Shirley started Westland Food Market on Galena Pike in West Portsmouth and operated it until 2002. Fred was a member of the Portsmouth Elks, the Elks Tuesday Night Golf League and the Bowling League.
Along with his parents Fred was preceded in death by his wife Shirley Swearingen Shupert, who he married on December 31, 1957, a daughter Jenny Shupert Bodmer, a brother John Wilson Shupert, step brother Harvey Joe Shupert, brothers in law; Ira Swearingen, Bill Hopper, Larry Coleman and Roy Allen "Boo" Swearingen, sister in law Patsy Shupert and a niece Amanda McGlone.
Fred is survived by 3 sons; Jeffery (Kathy) Shupert, John F. Shupert and Joseph A. (Lenora) Shupert, all of West Portsmouth, 2 brothers; Kenneth Lee (Carolyn) Shupert and Dale Glenn Shupert both of West Portsmouth, 2 sisters; Barbara Louise (David) Moritz and Beverly Sue Riley both of West Portsmouth, 8 grandchildren; Michelle Bodmer, Adam Bodmer, Andrea Brown, Brison, Blake, Joey and Megan Shupert and Jodi Monteith, 2 great grandchildren and a special friend Tish Reedy.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Thursday December 11, 2014 at the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth with Rick Phillips officiating. Interment will be in McKendree Cemetery with graveside military rites by the James Dickey Post 23 American Legion. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday and one hour prior to the service on Thursday. The family requests that donations be made to the Ira Swearingen Scholarship Fund or the Harley F. Shupert Sr. Scholarship Fund at the Scioto Foundation in Fred's name.
