Harold Martin Sayre, 93

Harold Martin Sayre of West Portsmouth, Ohio went home to the Lord on Saturday, June 27, 2009. He was born on Feburary 15, 1916, the first of three children born to the late Jasper Bennett Sayre and Elma Irene Aeh Sayre on February 15, 1916. Along with his parents Harold was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Ruth Southworth, and his brother Jasper Bennett Sayre, Jr.

Harold is survived by his wife Mae Avanelle Rapp Sayre, the daughter of Ralph Raymond Christian and Otley Mae Crowder Rapp, who he married on May 12, 1945, in Portsmouth, Ohio, one son Harold Raymond "Bud" Sayre (Connie) of West Portsmouth. Also surviving is one granddaughter, Jodi Robinson (Phil) of West Portsmouth; a grandson Chad Sayre (Alison) of Lucasville; six great-grandchildren Jordan Sayre, Chandler Sayre, Camden Robinson, Aiden Robinson, Eli Sayre and Emma Grace Sayre; many nieces, nephews and special friends and neighbors.

Harold beat the odds after surviving several years of tuberculosis as a young man, and went on to work until the age of 87. Over his many years of work, he was employed by the Selby Shoe Store, Shaffer's Market, Ohio Valley Wholesale, Wil-Car, and Hicks Wholesale.

Harold was especially devoted to his family. He loved his dogs and raising his garden.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Wednesday July 1, 2009 at Old Town United Methodist with Reverend Matthew Brookes officiating and interment in Rushtown Cemetery. Friends may call at the Roger Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth from 5 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday and one hour prior to the service at the church.
