James L. Callender, 85



James L. Callender, 85 of Friendship, died Tuesday September 11, 2012 at Southern Ohio Medical Center in the ER after a long illness. He was born August 29, 1927 in Huntington , WV to the late Elza J and Cretta V. Newman Callender. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Mildred G. Callender, a brother Roy B Callender and a sister Octovine Venturino. James was retired from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry, he was the former Pastor of Faith Tabernacle Church in Friendship and was a World War II Navy Veteran.. Jim loved the outdoors, he loved to hunt and teach people to hunt. He loved his grandchildren and loved spending time with them. For a hobby he enjoyed collecting knives and coins. He resided at Hempsted Manor in Portsmouth and made many friends who adored him.



James is survived by 3 daughters; Gaye L.(Tom) DePriest of Oil City PA, Rebecca L. (Harold) White of Friendship and Jamie L. Miller of New Boston, a brother Lynn Callender of Cleveland, 6 grandchildren; Heather N.(Nick) Skokowski, Jarrod L.(Courtney) DePriest, Cassandra L.(Frank) Prastine, Amanda M Taylor and Justine J Miller and Kaylin E. Miller, 6 great grandchildren; Kurtis J Morgan, Nicole R Skokowski, Sean M Prastine, Brooklyn DePriest, Beckett DePriest and Hayden Miller. Also surviving is a special friend Mary Knox.



Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Sunday, September 16, 2012 at the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth with Jimmy McCullough officiating. Interment will be in Friendship Cemetery with graveside military rites by James Dickey Post 23 American Legion.
