James Christopher Layne, 53

James Christopher Layne, 53 of McDermott Died Thursday May 25, 2023 at his home. He was born February 25, 1970 to the late Eugenia Layne.

Along with his mother he is preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Layne, and his sister Billie Layne.

Chris was a United States Army veteran. He was a gentle giant with a heart of gold. He enjoyed fishing, playing pool, going to demolition derbys with his wife and son, spending time with his children and spending time with his grandson Grady. He will be missed by many friends and co-workers from his time working at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility. Known by many as "Buckethead" he always wore a smile and was ready to crack jokes. He will be missed dearly by anyone who was lucky enough to meet him, or to hear his favorite line "Head or Gut?"

He is survived by his wife of 23 years Terri Layne, his children Hailey (Michael) Edwards, and Alexandria Layne and her fiancé Michael Medley, and his son Christopher Layne. He is also survived by his grandson Grady Edwards who referred to him as "Dodo". He will be very missed by his surviving siblings, extended family, and many friends and co-workers.

Memorial services will be 1:00PM Saturday June 3, 2023 at the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth with George Vastine officiating. Military rites will be provided by the James Dickey Post 23 American Legion. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday starting at 12:00 PM.
