Janell F. Oppy, 82
Janell F. Oppy, 82 of West Portsmouth, passed away Monday September 27, 2010 at Heartland of Portsmouth after a courageous fight with pancreatic cancer. She was born July 31, 1928 in to the late Oscar and Phyllis Jane Conley Schmidt. Janell graduated from Jefferson High School in 1946. She worked at Selby Shoe Company, Public Discount Store and Setty's Grocery on Rt 125. She was a quilter, seamstress, gardener and a great cook. In her late years she enjoyed feeding and watching her birds. Along with her late husband Carl, she was a member of the Do Si Do Square Dance Club. She had a great sense of humor and if you were around her for very long, she'd tell you a few of her favorite jokes. Janell fought a long and difficult battle against cancer, until her body was too weak to fight any longer. She fought it on her terms and refused to give in. Along with her parents Janell was preceded in death by her former husband and father of her children James Pennington, her husband Carl Oppy, brothers Floyd Phillip and Jerry Schmidt, sisters; Marian Alexander, Luella Gardner and Cleo Anne Mix and a grandson Jeremy Pennington.
Janell is survived by her daughter and caregiver Diana Gray, a son Rodney (Sarah) Pennington, son-in-law Wayne Gray, 3 grandchildren; Eric Gray, Kelli Conkel and Erin (Nick) Coleman, 5 great grandchildren; Tayler and Sydney Carter, Jared Conkel and Sophie and Cameron Coleman, a brother Lyle Schmidt, 1 stepson John Oppy, 3 stepdaughters; Paulette Long, Pauline Powell and Pam Rawlins, along with step grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday September 30, 2010 at the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth with Richard Duduit officiating and interment in West Union Cemetery.
