Larry Maynard, 67
Larry Maynard, 67 of Buena Vista died Sunday December 14 at his home. He was born March 30, 1947 to the late Harry Rodney "Rod" Maynard and Bertha Sparks Maynard who survives. Along with his father, Larry was preceded in death by a brother Gregory Lynn Maynard.
Larry was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam War where he earned the Purple Heart. Larry was a member of the James Dickey Post 23 American legion and was a union carpenter for the Labors Local 437 for over 38 years. He was a statistician for West Football for 32 years and also kept stats for the West High School girl's basketball team. He also coached little league baseball, pee wee football, soccer and basketball. Larry loved the outdoors and hunting with his dogs. He loved the Buena Vista and West Portsmouth communities. He opened his home every July 3 rd for the annual Maynard 4 th of July party and fireworks. Larry inspired many lives of our area especially the youth.
Along with his mother, Larry is survived by his beloved wife Teresa Gifford Maynard who he married October 13, 1972, 2 sons; Gregory (Jennifer) Maynard of West Portsmouth and Jason Maynard of Stout, a daughter, Melissa (Doug) Davis of Stout, a sister Patricia (Ron) D' Epifanio of Fairland, 7 grandchildren; Hannah Maynard, Alexis Maynard, Kelsey Ashton Davis, Josh Davis, Jack Cremeans, Larry Todd "LT" Maynard, and Mikina Maynard. He is also survived by his mother in law who he loved dearly Anna Walker "Dutch" Gifford of Stout, several nieces, nephews, friends and cousins. He cherished the time spent with his Sparks cousins.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday December 18, 2014 at the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth with Greg Cooper and Carl Rose officiating. Interment will be in McKendree Cemetery with military graveside rites by the James Dickey Post 23 American Legion. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8:00 PM. on Wednesday and one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Condolences may be sent to www.rogerwdavisfuneralhome.com
