Obituary

World War II Veteran
Ora Kitchen, age 90, of West Portsmouth, passed away Monday, September 12, 2011, at SOMC Hospice Center.
Born July 31, 1921, in West Portsmouth, Ohio, he was the son of the late Edward and Lottie Houck Kitchen. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Clara May Chattos Kitchen, who he married May 21, 1944 in Columbus, Ohio; an infant son, Ora Kitchen, Jr.; all of his brothers--Goble, Cleo, and Edward Kitchen; and, both of his sisters--Ellen Louise Thompson and Bernice Cassidy.
Ora was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, and a past member of the VFW and American Legion. A retired Teamster truck driver, Ora had been in trucking for over 50 years, and enjoyed working on trucks and cars as a mechanic. He and Clara had lived in the same house for decades and they often welcomed a neighbor, relative or guest for a cup of coffee and conversation in their kitchen. When she passed eight years ago, and with his eyesight failing, he appreciated having company, special visitors, and caregivers at the kitchen counter where he told them how to fix whatever was not working and shared his stories about his life as a trucker.
Ora is survived by his children--Charlott Smith of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, Charles (Dianna) Kitchen of Ottawa, Ohio, Lori (David) Brooks of Gallipolis, Ohio, Tina (Dennis Brazil) Kitchen of Baltimore, Maryland, and Catherine Hardyman of Gallipolis, Ohio; grandchildren--Dr. Charles (Wendy) Kitchen, Jr., Michael (Lisa) Kitchen, Whitney (Steve) Brooks Walton, Dane Brooks, Timothy Hardyman, and Sheryl Hardyman; and, great-grandchildren--Kaitlyn, Gavin, Hayley, Meagan, Alexis, Connor and Addison Kitchen, and Whitney Hardyman; numerous nieces and nephews; and, his faithful canine companion, Rocky.
Funeral Services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, September 17, 2011, at the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth, Ohio, with Pastor Glen Lawhun officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday morning beginning at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in Scioto Burial Park with military graveside rites conducted by James Dickey Post #23 of the American Legion.
