Raymond Gibson, 86
Raymond Gibson, 86 of West Portsmouth, died Thursday January 12, 2012 at SOMC Hospice. He was born May 20, 1925 in Heddon on the Wall in Northern England to the late James and Ethel Ward Gibson.
Raymond Retired from Scioto County Joint Vocational School where he taught Horticulture. He was a Medic in the Royal Navy during WWII. After the war he came to the United States to work at the Selby Farm where he met his wife, Joan Gavin Gibson who was also from England. They were married on April 24, 1954 and she preceded him in death in 1997 after 43 years of marriage. Ray used his horticulture knowledge and skills and started Ray Gibson Landscaping. You can see a lot of Ray's volunteer work through out the county. Along with his landscaping company he donated and volunteered his knowledge and time helping Garden Clubs decorate the city. Places like Court Street Landing, the KIA MIA Memorial, Salyer Point, just to name a few. He was known as a Landscape Architect. Ray was also active in the N.R.A. where he was a riffle and hand gun Instructor. He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church and USA Dance and 52 Dance Club. He was a member of Aurora Masonic Lodge # 48 of Portsmouth, a 32 Degree Mason and a member of the Portsmouth Shrine Club and El Hasa Shrine.
Ray is survived by 2 sons; James Christopher (Kay) Gibson of Friendship and Raymond Philip "Pep" (Barb) Gibson of Portsmouth, Catherine Lynn Gibson of El Paso, Texas, 5 grandchildren; Kristin (Richard) Healy, Erin (Darius) Williams, Molly Joan Gibson, Andrew Philip Gibson and Hunter Nolan Gibson, 4 great grandchildren; Max and Adrienne Williams, Annetta Grotsky and Jack Healy, along with his special dog "Patches" Ray is also survived by several friends and family members in England.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Monday January 16, 2012 at the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home with Sally Schisler officiating and interment in Friendship Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 5:00 PM on Sunday and 1 hour prior to the funeral on Monday. One of Ray's landscape designs was the Garden area at the Brew Pub where there will be a celebration of Ray's life there following the funeral at 5:30 PM.
