Virginia Marie Nickel, 89

Virginia 'Ginny' Marie O'Dell Nickel, 89 of Temple, TX, formerly of Friendship, OH, passed away Sunday March 13, 2011 in Temple, Texas.
Mrs. Nickel was born October 9, 1921 in Portsmouth, OH, the oldest of eight children to the late Luther Benton O'Dell and Della Farrell Beekman O'Dell. Virginia worked for Newport News Dry Dock Company, Midland Grocery, National Youth Administration, Gemperline Furniture and Nickel's Standard Oil Service Station. She was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church in Friendship, OH and associate member of Oak Park Methodist Church in Temple, TX. Virginia was an auxiliary member for Southern Ohio Medical Center, the former president of Westland Service Guild, Secretary of the Sunday School Class, Triple L (Live Longer and Love It), Chairman of Martha's Circle at Oak Park United Methodist Church, a volunteer at Children's Miracle Network at Scott White Hospital, a volunteer at Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children, and a member of Shawnee Nature Club. Along with her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her husband James Harold Nickel who she married November 4, 1942.

Virginia is survived by her son and his wife Drs. Allan E. and Susan P. Nickel of Temple TX, three grandchildren: Dr. Erin E. Nickel Scarth and her husband Justin A. Scarth of Media, PA, Laura M. Nickel of Belton, TX, and Brian P. Nickel of Fairfax, VA; six brothers, Harold O'Dell, Gene O'Dell, Edward Lee O'Dell, Lynn O'Dell all of Friendship, OH, Paul O'Dell of Excelsior, MN, and Ronald L. O'Dell of Woodland Park, CO, and one sister, Miriam Webb of Friendship, OH.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday March 17, 2011 at Friendship United Methodist Church with Reverend Matthew Brookes officiating and interment following in Friendship Cemetery. Friends may call at the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, March 16th and on Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oak Park United Methodist Church of Temple, TX or Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children in Killeen, TX.
